Human Values

At Mawson Primary School we are very proud of our Self Awareness Through Human Values Program, which began in 1998.
The Self-Awareness Through Human Values Program is based on the five Human Values of right conduct, peace, truth, love and non-violence and are taught through five specific teaching techniques.
In 2003, the 'Self-Awareness Through Human Values' booklet was published and distributed to all schools in the ACT. This booklet provides detailed information about the program.
To empower students to practise the five Human Values, the program is taught through thirty-five Related Values as seen here:
RIGHT CONDUCT |
PEACE |

Students are recognised and rewarded for practising human values. Teachers award human values tickets when they observe demonstrations of positive behaviour, and after each 25 tickets a student is presented with a Self-Awareness certificate during the school assembly.
Philosophy
Self-Awareness Through Human Values empowers the individual to develop emotional, cognitive and behavioural skills, which will ultimately lead to social harmony and emotional resiliency. It is through emotional resiliency that the individual is able to make positive choices for their well-being.
This program specifically addresses values where the individual learns how values feel, look and sound. It is based on the premise that behaviour is influenced by our character, which in turn is influenced by habit, action, feelings and thought. Therefore, positive thoughts lead to positive behaviour, and negative thoughts lead to negative behaviour.
Self-Awareness Through Human Values assists students in dealing with everyday dilemmas in a positive manner. It allows the staff and students to focus on behaviour through the values being practised or violated, instead of criticising the individual. It is learner-centred and creates a value-based language in addressing behavioural management.
Objectives
The objectives of the program are to:
- impart values to the growing personality of the child
- enable children to live their lives to the fullest potential by the development of character and all aspects of the personality
Outcomes
The main outcome of participating in the Self Awareness Through Human Values Program is a balanced individual with:
- greater emotional intelligence
- the capability of coping with the rigours of life
- empowerment to make better choices in life (including the ability to say no)
This is accomplished by students who:
- accept people different from themselves
- respect their parents, teachers, elders, each other and law and order
- give service to the community, particularly to those less fortunate than themselves
- develop good healthy habits and good behaviour
- acquire academic and spiritual growth
- gain an insight into the nature of society
- work with and live in society, efficiently and harmoniously
- develop discrimination, wisdom and conduct themselves with humility and gentleness
WHOLE SCHOOL VALUES PROJECTS:
In addition to class activities, all children at our school celebrate the Human Values Program through whole school projects that originate from their understanding of the values:
PROJECT 1
All children painted a tile to form part of a Human Values Mural, which is located in the GP Room. Each of the tiles illustrates the themes of our Human Values Program:
- Lyrebird - Love
- Kangaroo - Right Conduct
- Turtle - Truth
- Penguin - Peace
- Numbat - Non-Violence

PROJECT 2:
PROJECT 3:
Another project was the participation of all children in the creation of the Spirit of the Dragon Courtyard by painting part of the Nine Dragon Wall. They also designed and painted their hand onto a paver reflecting the values at Mawson. The pavers were laid in the shape of a dragon showing the community spirit of Mawson Primary.
PROJECT 4:
The latest project to have commenced during our 'Creating Our Learning Community' Program, is the creation of a mural depicting what it means to belong to Mawson Primary School. When the mural is completed, it will be placed on an external wall outside the hall from 2008. The theme for our current mural is 'We are the Future', which was developed by the children in consultation with parents and teachers.
