Year 4

Welcome to Year 4

This Year our Year 4 students are excited as they move into their brand-new purpose-built classroom. Our teachers this year are Mr Lai and Mrs Stevenson.

In English year 4 are taught a balanced literacy program utilising quality literature. They will be engaged in a range of activities focusing on language, literature and literacy differentiated to their ability level. The strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating.

Our Mathematics program utilises the enVision Maths curriculum resource to teach the Australian curriculum. Each week in Mathematics, students will be working on mental computation skills for the four operations and problem-solving strategies. Mathematical concepts will also be integrated into our History, Geography and Science Inquiry units. Mathematics sessions will incorporate the following elements - warm up activities, mental computation, explicit teaching of concepts, consolidation and extension activities.

Throughout the year we will be integrating our inquiry units across the subject areas of History, Geography and Science. The inquiry unit provides students with a “big idea” that will help them process their world and apply knowledge. It gives them opportunities to make connections across a variety of themes and ideas. Students will engage in higher level thinking, active problem-solving activities and research.

In 2019, the Year 4 cohort comprises 1 Mandarin Immersion Programme (MIP) class and 1 mainstream class (the second being a multi age Year 3/4). The MIP class is taught Mandarin for two days each week and the mainstream class has Mandarin for one hour each week.

Duncan Lawler

3/4 Team Leader

This is my 30th year of teaching and I have been at Mawson for the past 3 years. I have taught from preschool through to Year 6 and am passionate about literacy and early education. Outside of school I am a keen gardener, enjoy reading and love fishing. As team leader for Year 3/4 I am looking forward to working with students and their families.

Fiona Stevenson

Role: Classroom Teacher

This is my fourth year at Mawson Primary and my 28th year teaching! I love the cultural diversity of our school and enjoy learning about our world from my students and their families.

I am married to Rob and we are blessed with three adult children, a Border Collie, a Mini Foxie and two cats. I love to read, kayak, 4WD, fish and go camping. I am looking forward to moving to our brand-new classroom in term two and working with my class to make it a warm, welcoming and dynamic learning space.

Bright Lai

Role: MIP teacher

My name is Bright Lai. This is my second year of teaching which I am sure will be filled with plenty of learning experiences. I have recently returned from a trip to Taiwan where I had the pleasure of visiting WuXing Elementary School. I aim to truly build my classroom with the assistance and hard work of my students, to allow for a fully immersive mandarin program. My hobbies include badminton, listening to music and teaching!
