Mawson Primary School has reviewed the way the Mandarin Immersion Program runs and has decided to implement an authentic bilingual model. In Kindergarten 2020, we will run two Mandarin Immersion classes. 50% of the curriculum will be taught in Mandarin by a native Mandarin speaker and the other 50%of the curriculum will be taught in English.

Out of area enrolments into the MIP program will be considered if there are places available. Entry into the Mandarin Immersion Program for out of area students will be based on criteria such as: students who are native Mandarin speakers, students who have a Mandarin speaking parent or family member, students with prior knowledge of Mandarin, eg those enrolled in the Chinese Australian Early Childhood Centre, students who can demonstrate suitability to a bilingual Mandarin / English program through prior knowledge of the language, parental commitment to the school’s Mandarin / English bilingual program, active support of current siblings in the bilingual program and / or any other relevant supporting evidence.  Supporting documentation addressing these criteria will be required for all out of area enrolments and an interview may also be required.

All applications must provide proof of residency in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Mawson Primary School no longer accepts students from NSW.

Enrolment into mainstream classes remains unchanged. Student resides in the PEA (Priority Enrolment Area) and/or is a sibling of student/s already enrolled.
