Preschool

Children at Mawson Preschool will be nurtured and secure in the relationships they form with staff, parents and other children when they attend for their preschool year.

Mawson Preschool is a place where children can:

  • Be happy and feel confident
  • Develop independence
  • Communicate and develop confident relationships with others
  • Express themselves through art, music, movement and speech
  • Observe, question and organise their thinking about the world.
  • Be eager for new experiences.

The emphasis is based on the Early Years Learning Framework which follows the 5 principles of:

  1. secure, respectful and reciprocal relationships
  2. partnerships
  3. high expectations and equity
  4. respect for diversity and
  5. ongoing learning and reflective practice.

Programming is based on individual learning styles and needs using a holistic developmental approach. Aspects such as physical, personal, social, emotional and cognitive are all taken into account in the design and implementation of a play based programme. There are numerous skills that are encouraged and at times explicitly taught. Some examples are problem solving, critical thinking, social challenges, communication, questioning and above all having fun. Using teachable moments to support learning provides children with an active and enriched environment that develops their strengths and interests. To a 4 year old learning through play is their "work".
